I just read a piece in the New York Sun, where I work, about there being fewer pay phones in subway stations. And that the phones that are often broken. Of course, everyone has a cell phone these days, so who needs a pay phone? Eventually, they say subterranean towers will be installed and we'll all be able to use cell phones and other devices while on the no. 1 train. I would just like to shout my small Internet shout: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I feel I am overwhelmed by beeping. I had to move subway cars last night because some dude was doing something with his phone that caused it to beep every minute. I almost asked him if he knew how annoying it was. Instead I moved because the subway is like a car for New Yorkers and they feel they can do anything there, like sleep or clip their nails or make loud, annoying beeping noises. People just don't seem to realize that they are in a public place. More likely, they don't care.
Imagine being surrounded by all that beeping and not being able to move cars. Not to mention the chatting. Think of all the conversations we'll have to endure about ex-boyfriends and "life-threatening" illnesses (I heard a girl talking about this on the bus last night -- ugh). Subway rides may become unbearable, and that's my car, too. So, I say: Shut up about these towers. Everyone talks too much anyway.
