February 1

I feel like I was hungover all of January. After December's hustle and bustle, nothing can be done in January. I mean, sure, there's television to watch and couches to crash out on, but I certainly haven't been getting going on all those projects and resolutions I have. Well, except one. First things first, however. Here is my list.

1. Drink more water and tea.

2. Read my bank statement.

3. Be present. (Try not to worry too much, nor to expect too much.)

4. Plan a trip to Santa Fe. (The trip doesn't have to be this year.)

5. Wear my red dress. (This is code for go to the gym!)

6. Wear my red shoes.

I did wear the red shoes to my belated birthday party last week. These are not just any red shoes. These are 5-inch, red velvet platforms that I bought for Halloween in San Francisco in 1997. I wore them to all the big parties in college. Now I can barely walk in them after a few drinks, but it's cool. People helped me up.

I had those shoes shipped from New York to Santa Fe when I went back to college as a junior. Another box that was shipped was lost, full of pictures and jewelry (including some from each of my grandmothers...let that be a lesson: keep the important stuff with you.). I cried and cried when the box never came, but it was full of past things. The red shoes represented the future: an unquanitifable amount of fun was to be had when wearing them. Now they bridge the gap: I have memories of fun parties that happened ten years ago, or last week, and a future of fun times to come.

I have a red dress like that too. It requires a strapless bra and crunches.
