a true sign

I just saw a fellow pulling a huge cart of watermelon down Broadway. Some people look for the Mr. Softee trucks or the woman selling coco icys at the corner, but a cart full of watermelon does it for me. YAY! for spring and summer and the happy feelings (and fruits) they bring.

In other news, I had a so-so sandwich and a delicious chocolate egg cream at my local diner today. Do you drink these? An egg cream: milk, flavoring, and seltzer water. It's a frothy delight. This was one of the best I've ever had. They left the can of seltzer, which meant I could make it all frothy again by adding more. I overdid it in the end, and the ratio of chocolate milk to seltzer was compromised. This was my fault though, and I'll know better next time.

I have never heard of an egg cream. Is it a NYC thing or an east coast thing? It looks good but the ingredient list and the name are so odd. Hmmmm....I am now officially on the hunt to see what the windy city has to offer in this category. XXOO D.

I think the egg cream is a NYC phenomenon, like perfect bagels and Cel-Ray. I've never seen them anywhere else. I think they are delicious. Others do not agree...something about milk and seltzer turns them off. Silly.

Gold stars for effort with the egg cream (leaving the can of seltzer isn't quite the same as the extras of a milkshake in that tall metal thing, is it?)

Bonus blue stars for blogging frequency! Happy Easter, too.

great leslie: you really are great, and so are egg creams. they were invented in brooklyn and originally came from a yiddish word that sounded like egg but meant "good." i learned this on the west wing. toby zeigler was explaining the egg cream phenomenon to president bartlet in the oval office. best drink ever. best television ever. xo

the seltzer can was not as exciting as the extra milkshake in the metal mixer, it's true. but it was cool to refresh the bubbles...the first time. then, as i say, i put too much seltzer in.

good info on the egg creams, t.

I'm told the secret to the egg cream is Fox's U-Bet Chocolate Syrup. Still manufactured in Bklyn. Wonder if I could make an egg cream with lactard milk.

Leslie, our conversation the other day made me want cookies, but I didn't have many ingredients in the house. So like a good Yankee pioneer, I made snickerdoodles!
